In May, temperatures rose to 4 to 8°C above seasonal averages. By the end of the month, at least 37 people had collapsed and died in the streets of the southern state of Telangana, as a result of the scorching heat.

These official figures are a gross underestimate. According to a recent study, “a single day of extreme heat causes approximately 3,400 excess deaths [across India]”.

Heatwaves strike earlier every year

Although heatwaves are a recurring feature of India’s climate, they are arriving earlier in the year, becoming more intense, and occurring more frequently as a consequence of global warming. In parts of northwestern, central, and eastern India, nighttime temperatures remain above 44°C. Heatwaves that once affected mainly the country’s arid northwest are now reaching coastal cities, which had until recently been largely spared such extreme temperatures.

According to Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, India’s chief meteorologist, “Heatwaves will become more frequent, longer-lasting, and more intense unless precautionary and preventive measures are taken.” Another recent study, published in the scientific journal Science Advances, found that climate change caused the number of Indian heatwaves resulting in more than 100 deaths to increase 2.5-fold between 1960 and 2009. The human toll is likely to rise significantly.

Lethal consequences for human health

Coupled with high humidity, these heatwaves prevent the human body from cooling itself through perspiration, as hot air is saturated with moisture. As a result, the body’s core temperature cannot fall, leading to heat stress that damages vital organs, particularly the heart and kidneys. According to the French daily L’Humanité, “Scientists estimate that four to six hours of exposure can be fatal, even for a young person in perfect health.”

On the website of the Times of India, articles warning readers about the symptoms of heat stress have become commonplace: profuse sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, blurred vision, rapid heartbeat, and more. Young children and the elderly are especially vulnerable because they have fewer physical resources and are often more socially isolated. In Delhi, ambulance services across the city have been overwhelmed, particularly for the treatment of hundreds of children suffering from heat-related illnesses. Many schools have been forced to close, while India has already brought forward the school summer holidays since 2022. In megacities such as Delhi, high-rise buildings’ concrete and street asphalt only intensify the danger. Temperatures are approaching 50°C even in the shade, while the city’s air is also heavily polluted with particulate matter.

Poor workers bear the brunt of heat-related deaths and complications

In India, precarious workers and communities have the least access to air conditioning. As a result, they are the most affected by extreme heat stress. Homes become dangerous without cooling equipment, while the government urges people to stay indoors. For those who do have access to air conditioning or electric fans, however, prolonged power outages remain the norm. Electricity demand reached a record high on Thursday, 26 May, while some transformers and power lines were damaged by the heat, and stopped functioning.

The Indian government’s official figures are unreliable, and the true scale of the crisis is almost certainly far greater than the published statistics suggest. According to the Times of India, the state of Andhra Pradesh recorded more than 300 cases of heatstroke between 1 March and 19 May. In New Delhi, construction workers are forced to continue working on building sites for just a few hundred rupees a day—the equivalent of only a few euros. Large numbers suffer from heat-related illnesses while building homes and offices for clients in the capital’s affluent neighbourhoods. Speaking to Le Monde, 21-year-old bricklayer Massum Gairulla described the conditions:

“My whole body aches. I have to stop every thirty minutes just to make it through the day.”

Across the world, the poorest pay for global warming with their lives

Although the IQAir platform reports that the world’s 50 hottest cities are all in India, every year more than sixty regions across the globe are struck by deadly heatwaves. People living in humid tropical regions are the most exposed. Even a slight increase in average temperatures or humidity is enough to cause large-scale casualties.

According to the World Health Organization, “between 2000 and 2019, nearly 500,000 heat-related deaths occurred every year, with 45 percent in Asia and 36 percent in Europe. In Europe alone, an estimated 61,672 excess deaths were attributed to heat during the summer of 2022.”

In recent weeks, much of Western Europe has endured record-breaking heat. Temperatures climbed above 40°C in parts of Spain, France and Italy, while Belgium approached 40°C and the United Kingdom reached 35.5°C during its third heatwave of the year. The extreme conditions contributed to Western Europe recording its hottest June on record, according to the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.

Without a drastic reduction in CO₂ emissions, up to 75 percent of the world’s population could be exposed to deadly heatwaves by the end of the century. Just 90 companies are responsible for around two-thirds of global CO₂ emissions, while the richest 1 percent of the world’s population emits, on average, 70 times more greenhouse gases than the poorest 50 percent. These figures are a stark reminder of who bears responsibility for the growing death due to extreme heat, and why the entire system needs to be overthrown.

<p
