{"id":787,"date":"2026-08-04T18:11:57","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T21:11:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crpnews.com\/asia\/?p=787"},"modified":"2026-08-04T18:16:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T21:16:25","slug":"sanae-takaichi-cannot-resolve-the-crises-facing-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crpnews.com\/asia\/sanae-takaichi-cannot-resolve-the-crises-facing-japan\/","title":{"rendered":"Sanae Takaichi Cannot Resolve the Crises Facing Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just about five months ago, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was riding high. In a move the New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/09\/world\/asia\/japan-election-takaichi-analysis.html\">described<\/a> as rescuing the country\u2019s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) back from the abyss, Takaichi used a snap election to secure a record 316 seats in the National Diet (the country\u2019s national legislature) for her party.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Takaichi herself boasts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1456852\/world-leader-approval-ratings\/\">one of the highest approval ratings<\/a> of any world leader. This remains the case as the National Diet\u2019s first session of 2026 (and the first with LDP\u2019s supermajority) comes to a close. There are, however, signs that Takaichi\u2019s support is not guaranteed. Some polls released in July show her approval rating has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2026\/07\/30\/japan\/politics\/takaichi-popularity-governing-challenges\/\">dropped<\/a> by up to ten points. The decline comes as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/japan-pm-takaichis-approval-rating-slides-inflation-bites-yomiuri-poll-shows-2026-07-27\/\">she has struggled<\/a> to address cost of living concerns in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japan\u2019s first ever woman prime minister, Takaichi contrasts the image of stale old men which many Japanese people had come to associate with the LDP. Media-savvy and perceived as dedicated to serving the Japanese people, she was able to reach young sectors of society that LDP had previously been unable to connect with. This is all part of what fueled Takaichi\u2019s rise. But another key part was her political and economic agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japan has been in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leftvoice.org\/the-roots-of-japan-s-crisis\/\">prolonged economic crisis<\/a>, with the yen reaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/01\/economy\/japanese-yen-low\">a 40-year low<\/a> in value at the start of July. Takaichi was elected in part due to her bold economic promises. While there has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/business\/2025\/10\/31\/economy\/takaichi-economic-policy\/\">some debate<\/a>, Takaichi is generally seen as a Keynesian politician who aims to stimulate the Japanese economy through major investments in key industries tied to advanced technology and the defense industry, favoring multi-year budgeting over single-year budgets. She has further promised to relieve consumer costs by lowering Japan\u2019s 8 percent tax on food sales to just 1 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elected largely due to her economic promises, Takaichi has been unable to pass much of this agenda, even with her party\u2019s supermajority. Instead, she has had to rely on intervention from the United States, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/08\/02\/business\/us-japan-yen.html\">which stepped in<\/a> late last week to prop up the yen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether or not this intervention succeeds in stabilizing Japan\u2019s economy, it signals the Japanese government\u2019s own inability to address the issue most impacting Japanese workers. It also further reinforces Japan\u2019s subordination to the United States at a time when the United States is increasingly weak and unable, or unwilling, to act as a reliable ally, even to its most sycophantic partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Takaichi\u2019s Push to Militarize Japan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Takaichi has, however, been moving forward with another pillar of her political agenda: Japanese rearmament. This has been a goal of the LDP since its founding. The party, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leftvoice.org\/japan-a-right-wing-one-party-state\/\">established<\/a> during the U.S. military occupation of Japan after World War II \u2014 in fact the U.S. occupation government helped the LDP take and maintain power to approve U.S. bases and serve as a bulwark against class struggle and communist movements in Asia \u2014 has long sought to revise Japan\u2019s Pacifist Constitution which enshrines in writing Japan\u2019s rejection of war as a right of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For several decades Japan has been building a conventional military, despite the restrictions of the Pacifist Constitution. But Takaichi has leaned on <a href=\"https:\/\/jacobin.com\/2026\/05\/japan-rearmament-nationalism-military\">reactionary nationalist sentiments<\/a> within Japanese society, as well as China\u2019s more aggressive role in the region, to justify an unprecedented leap in militarism, such as ending a ban on the export of lethal weapons and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-07-30\/japan-to-launch-intelligence-bureau-in-takaichi-s-security-push\">establishing<\/a> a centralized intelligence bureau. Japan has also been <a href=\"https:\/\/crpnews.com\/asia\/with-u-s-blessing-japan-and-the-philippines-are-building-a-militarist-alliance-in-southeast-asia\/\">deepening its military cooperation<\/a> with the United States and the Philippines, with the country now serving as a key part of Trump\u2019s military vision for U.S. force projection in the Asia-Pacific by <a href=\"https:\/\/responsiblestatecraft.org\/uspacom-name-change\/\">building up forces<\/a> along the First Island Chain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remilitarization of Japan comes as China has rapidly expanded its military and acted more aggressively in the Pacific. Tensions between the two East-Asian powers have flared up as a result of both Takaichi\u2019s and Xi Jinping\u2019s aggressive agendas. In <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/International\/japan-taiwan-strait-warship-china-disputed-waters\/story?id=114174777\">recent years<\/a>, the Japanese military has transited the Taiwan Strait, a provocative move that Takaichi has publicly defended, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/how-dangerous-is-the-current-china-japan-rift\/\">sparking a diplomatic crisis<\/a> between Japan and China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is nothing benevolent about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leftvoice.org\/china-in-the-global-capitalist-system\/\">China&#8217;s rise<\/a> in the region. The miserable conditions of the Chinese working class and the government&#8217;s oppression of national minorities clearly show that it is not a positive alternative to U.S. or Japanese imperialism. But Takaichi&#8217;s warmongering, which relies on sinophobia that doesn&#8217;t distinguish the <a href=\"https:\/\/crpnews.com\/asia\/notes-on-the-formation-of-the-chinese-working-class-1840-1989\/\">Chinese working class<\/a> from Chinese capitalism, only weakens Japanese workers by preparing them to go to war with their class siblings instead of uniting in struggle against capitalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Need for a Strong Japanese Left<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Takaichi\u2019s militaristic policies, marked by xenophobia and reminiscent of Japan&#8217;s imperial history, have broad support. But even these have been confronted. With <a href=\"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/2026\/06\/japan-raves-tea-parties-protest\/\">young people at the forefront<\/a>, tens of thousands have protested her efforts to revise the constitution, making them some of the country\u2019s largest protests in recent history. These youth sectors of the anti-war movement have also connected the fight against rearmament to other progressive causes including LGBTQ+ and women\u2019s rights and opposing the country\u2019s rising xenophobia in favor of an internationalist perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The emergence of a stronger Left which can confront Takaichi and the broader right-wing political landscape that brought her to power would be one of the most progressive developments for the region given Japan\u2019s own imperialist position in global capitalism as well as its role as one of U.S. imperialism\u2019s most consistent partners in the region. While China\u2019s aggressive moves in the region should not be glossed over, it would be absurd to believe that the United States or Japan \u2014 both of which have committed numerous atrocities in East Asia \u2014 have any right to militarily dominate the region themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of the legacy of the LDP and U.S. imperialism was that they worked together to <a href=\"https:\/\/pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu\/honorstheses\/1181\/\">crush the emergence<\/a> of a more militant labor movement in Japan. This, along with a cultural aversion to public protests and open political exchange, makes the growth of a socialist movement in Japan difficult. But there are already signs that Takaichi\u2019s right-wing agenda will be unable to resolve the crises that Japanese workers face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, young Japanese people are showing an interest in progressive and even <a href=\"https:\/\/newsonjapan.com\/article\/135548.php\">Marxist ideas<\/a>. If they can connect with other Left and working-class sectors throughout East Asia this can further develop the emergence of a strong Japanese Left.
